Computer Generations
Computer Generations :
1st Generation of
Computer:
1.
Eckert
& Mauchly developed the first electronic computer ENIAC in 1946 in USA.
2.
Vacuum
Tube was the Core element in 1st generation computer.
3.
The time provide of 1st generation of
computer was from 1946-1959.
4.
Punched-core & paper tape secondary storage.
5.
Limited interval storage capacity & slow
input/output operation.
6.
It not portable.
7.
Consumes lot of electricity.
8.
Machine code
used for as programming language.
1st Generation Developed
Computer Names:
1. ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and
Computer)
2. EDVAC(Electronic
Discrete Variable Automatic Computer)
3. EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic
Calculator)
4. UNIVAC-I (Universal Automatic Computer )
2nd Generation of
Computer:
1.
The second generation computers are IBM-700, ATLAS & KL 1901.
2.
Transistor
was the core element in 2nd generation of computer.
3.
The time period of 2nd generation of
computer was from 1959 to 1965.
4.
Tapes and
magnetic disk was used for secondary
storage.
5.
High level procedural languages FORTRAN & COBAL were used.
6.
Required less power to operate.
7.
Smaller reliable & faster than 1st
generation of computer.
8.
Magnetic
Core was used for primary storage.
3rd Generations of
Computer:
1.
The third generation Computers are IBM/360, NCR 395 , TDC-316 developed by
Jack Kilby.
2.
Integrated circuits (ICs) was the core element in third generation of computer.
3. The
time period of 3rd generation of Computer was from 1965-1971.
4.
Magnetic
Disk was used for secondary storage.
5.
Development of Minicomputers are start from 3rd generation.
6.
In this generation Operating system was
developed , which are (Real time
operating system) & (Multiprogramming Operating system.)
7.
Smaller then second generation.
8.
High level programming languages like FORTRAN –II to IV, COBOL, PASCAL PL1, PLGOL- 68
are used for making 3rd generation.
The fourth generation Computers are DEC10, STAR 1000 etc.
Large Scale integrated circuits LSICs & VLSICs are Core elements of 4th generation Computers.
The time period of 4th generation Computers was from 1971 to 1985.
Semiconductor was used for primary storage.
Developments of Microcomputer or PC was start from 4th generation.
In this generation Microprocessor was used.
High level programming languages like C, C++ & DBMS are used in this this generation.
Application development by users with user friendly.
5th Generation of Computers:
1.
5th generation is called Future Generation of Computers.
2.
The fifth generation Computers are Desktop,
Laptop, Palmtop etc.
3.
Ultra large scale Integration ULSI is the Core element of 5th
generation.
4.
The time period of 5th generation is 1985 to till today.
5.
RAM &
ROM is used for primary storage.
6.
HDD &
SDD is used for secondary storage.
7. All programming languages like C, C++, JAVA, PYTON, .NET, etc included.
